Our practice is focused on dental decay prevention and gum health management. During the initial exam, my goal is to give the patients an overview of her or his overall dental health status. I usually provide the more conservative treatment plans to preserve the natural dentitions.
Unlike the practices that strongly emphasize on esthetic or cosmetic dentistry, I am inclined to concentrate on finding and fixing the dental caries. All the patients have the opportunities to see "before, during and after" the decay is removed from each specific tooth. Being able to view the whole process helps to educate and teach patients the importance of prevention.
For most dentists, It is more profitable to focus on treatments that make teeth look better than fixing teeth that require lengthy and complicated procedures. However, after having fixed 20,000+ cavities in my career, I am a true believer that taking care of any clinically visible and "radiographically invisible" dental decays have a higher priority. If the dental cavities were treated early enough, patients can save lots of unnecessary spending on expensive and complicated treatment plans later on in their life.
In my opinion, the best "treatment" that can be offered, is to educate and help patients to practice consistent and proper oral hygiene care on a daily basis. The ultimate goal is to preserve every single one of their teeth and maintain good gum health so that they can enjoy chewing with natural teeth even when they get older!
